Period Floorboard Restoration

Bringing original Victorian and Edwardian pine boards back to life – character kept, tired finish gone.

Overview

Many homes across Merton, Sutton and South West London still have their original pine floorboards – often hidden under carpet, darkened by old stain or left with a dark border where a rug once sat. Restoration combines sanding with the repairs these older floors usually need: securing loose boards, replacing damaged ones, dealing with gaps and choosing a finish that suits the house. The aim is always to save the original timber and keep its character.

  • Saves original period timber wherever possible
  • Dark stained borders and old varnish removed
  • Loose, damaged and patched boards dealt with properly
  • Gap filling with resin or traditional pine slivers
  • Finishes from natural and whitewash to warm honey tones

FAQs

Period Floorboard Restoration questions

Can old floorboards be saved?

Almost always. Damaged or badly patched boards can be replaced with matching timber, loose boards re-fixed and gaps treated, so the floor can be sanded and finished as one.

Will the dark border around my room come out?

Old stain soaks into softwood around the edges of a room, so it takes careful edge sanding – but in most cases it comes back to clean timber, as you can see in our Putney bedroom project.

Is floor sanding really dust-free?

We won't pretend it's 100% – nobody's is. Our Bona and Lägler machines run with high-capacity extraction, and we'd honestly put it at around 98–99% dust-free. You may find a little surface dust settle over the next few days, but it's very minimal, and we clean down thoroughly before we leave.
