Gap Filling & Pine Slivers

Resin filler or hand-fitted pine slivers to cut draughts and tidy up gaps between boards.

Overview

Gaps between floorboards let in draughts and collect dirt. We offer two methods. Resin filler is mixed with the floor's own sanding dust and worked into the gaps – quick and effective, although due to the nature of wood it can't be guaranteed: as boards move with the seasons, filler can occasionally work loose over time. For pine floors we recommend our sliver service: thin strips of pine are glued into the gaps, leaving far smaller gaps to fill and a much better finish with far less chance of filler dropping out. On oak and similar floors the gaps are usually minimal, so filler rarely ever comes out.

  • Fewer draughts and less heat loss
  • A cleaner, more uniform look
  • Slivers recommended for pine boards
  • Filler mixed with your floor's own dust for a close colour match

FAQs

Gap Filling & Pine Slivers questions

Filler or slivers – which should I choose?

For pine floors with noticeable gaps we recommend slivers: it is a longer process, but it gives a better finish and much less chance of filler dropping out. For oak and floors with fine gaps, resin filler works very well.

Is gap filling guaranteed?

Resin filler isn't guaranteed – wood naturally moves with humidity and filler can work its way out over time. Slivers move with the boards, which is why we suggest them for pine.

Does the filler smell?

The resin filler is a strong-smelling solvent product, but once the floor has been sanded the smell dies down quite quickly.
