Herringbone Restoration

Expert care for herringbone and chevron floors, finished so the pattern really sings.

Overview

Herringbone is the most elegant of patterned floors, and the most demanding to sand. With the grain changing direction block by block, the sequence and angle of sanding matter. Our Epsom herringbone project shows the difference: a tired orange finish taken back to clean, even blocks right into the bay window.

  • Pattern-aware sanding sequence
  • Borders and bays detailed by hand and edger
  • Multi-disc fine sanding
  • Natural, oiled or lacquered finishes
  • Showpiece results

FAQs

Herringbone Restoration questions

Is herringbone harder to sand?

Yes – the alternating grain direction means it has to be sanded in the right sequence and finished with fine sanding to avoid visible scratches.

Can herringbone be stained?

Yes. Once it's sanded properly, herringbone takes stain beautifully – from pale and natural to smoked and dark tones.
